Be safe before, during and after "The Big One"

With the impending Oregon earthquake otherwise known as “The Big One” we wanted to highlight some important tips and facts regarding earthquakes.

Earthquakes can happen anywhere. However, they are more prominent in the Midwest and along the west coast fault lines.

Earthquakes can cause widespread damage: Tsunami’s, landslides, avalanches, rock fall, fires, and they can wash out and damage roads.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS

• If you are in a vehicle pull over, stop the vehicle, and unbuckle your seat belt
• If you are in bed, stay there and remove the covers
• Do not go outside
• Hold onto to door frames and other structurally sound framing
• Have a ten-day supply of food and approximately 20 gallons of water

How to be prepared beforehand:

Secure items, such as televisions, and objects that hang on walls. Store heavy and breakable objects on low shelves.

Create a family emergency communications plan that has an out-of-state contact. Plan where to meet if you get separated.

“Obtain an earthquake insurance policy as regular homeowner’s policies do not cover it. “

Post-earthquake Safety:

Expect aftershocks to follow an earthquake.

Check yourself, children, and the elderly for any potential injuries

Do not enter damaged buildings.
